Its seems to be the common opinion that chags are the most friendliest of koi,i dont have one (yet!) but what are your opinions, and why is it so.

Hi Stevie

I purchased 2 ochiba chagoi from Hatherton Aquatics last year and they have made a big difference to my pond.  They seem to calm the other koi and seem to bring them up for feeding.  Both chagoi feed from hand and others are now following suit.

I think its partly to do with them being the greediest..... They appear so desperate for food that they don't care who you are or what your doing as long as they can get their grub. Therefore, this in turn makes them the most likely to sit on the surface and come nearest to you.

I have a friend with a 5000 gallon pond who has 2 chagoi 60-70 cm+ he has roughly a dozen other koi of various types but could not get them to hand feed or even come to the surface when he was at the pond side, they would wait until he left or moved away before they would surface to feed.
He put his 2 chagoi in and he said within 20 minutes the Chagoi were hand feeding and as a result most of his other fish now hand feed.
I have suffered similarly with my koi, partly due to having a small pond which I have now upgraded to 2000gallon,however I purchased a 30 cm female Chagoi and immediately the fish became less nervous of me.
The Chagoi hasn't hand fed from me yet,due to it jumping from my pond a few months back(See jumping koi thread) but it will come to the surface with me near and when I offer food it will take a look but is not quite brave enough yet.
Personally I think that Chagoi even though they look fairly plain are absolutely beautiful and are the best fish to have in a pond.

Defiantly the most friendliest of all koi, my 24" chagoi can turn on 5p piece if it thinks food is likely to come his way. gfrears1 try giving your chag either prawns or garlic

i bought two of them, two years ago. One's a gin-rin with reflective scales and the other just a standard model.

Firstly I was amazed at how confident they seem to be, and secondly even more amazed at how quickly they have grown. Doubling in size and then some since I had them.

As other people have said on this thread - they are quite greedy but incredibly tame. They'll swim on to my hand, lte you stroke them and dont even mind if I gently lift them out of the water!!

Hi,
I would also add that ochiba shigures are as friendly as chags, possibly friendlier! Well, mine certainly is anyway (and I have two chagois too)

My "Ochi" is extremely friendly...certainly the tamest fish in my pond...

Great looking fish as well....can't wait to see his mature colourings in a year or two...as at the mo he's changing all the time.

I've been told that apparently Ochiba Shigure standards for Autumn Leaves?

i just recently bought a chagoi and it sure is a greedy little thing its grown loads already in a month either that or i'm imagining it, as for the friendliest fish in my pond i think its an orenji /gin matsuba and i think its a she because all the torpedo shaped ones keep chasing her around and shes having none of it.

ochiba shigure means literally autumn leaves on water. They can vary abit in shading. Some can be quite pale, mine is darker but with a lovely dappled brown/golden effect. It also has gin rin scales - some dont.
